A fact family is a collection of related addition and subtraction facts, or multiplication and division facts, made from the same numbers.

For example, for the numbers 7, 8, and 15, the addition/subtraction fact family consists of

7 + 8 = 15

8 + 7 = 15

15 - 8 = 7

15 - 7 = 8

For example, for the numbers 7, 8, and 15, the addition/subtraction fact family consists of

7 + 8 = 15

8 + 7 = 15

15 - 8 = 7

15 - 7 = 8

Go to the card randomiser. Select draw 2 cards from one deck

( Ace equals 1, jack equals 11, Queen = 12 and King equal s 13 )

Multiply these two numbers together eg

drew a 3 and a jack

Write the fact family

3 x 12 = 36, 12 x 3 = 36, 36 ÷ 12 = 3, 36 ÷ 3 = 12

Multiply these two numbers together eg

drew a 3 and a jack

Write the fact family

3 x 12 = 36, 12 x 3 = 36, 36 ÷ 12 = 3, 36 ÷ 3 = 12

## Multiplying positive and negative numbers

**The rule for multiplying and dividing is quite easy and relates to multiplying positive numbers. We know that 5 x 5 = 25**

- When the signs are different the answer is negative ( eg multiply a positive number by a negative number 5 x -5 = -25
- When the signs are the same the answer is positive. 5 x 5 = 25

If you select a red card (heart or diamond) the number is negative, if you draw a black card the number is positive (spades, clubs)

Multiply these two numbers together eg

drew a 3 of diamonds and a jack of spades

Write the fact family (remember that if the integers have the same signs positive or negative numbers you will end up with a positive product, if the signs are different you will end up with a negative product)

Write the fact family for your numbers

- 3 x 12 = -36, 12 x -3 = -36, -36 ÷ 12 = -3, -36 ÷ -3 = 12
